FranNet franchising a job creation engine in down market

CLEVELAND, Tenn. While virtually every sector of the economy remains stagnant in the recession, the franchised business sector is growing with FranNet of Eastern Tennessee’s help -- and those new businesses are boosting the local economy.

The International Franchise Association projects 1,900 new U.S. franchise businesses for 2011, creating 194,000 jobs and adding $33 billion more to the economy. The average new franchise business creates 10 jobs, according to FRANdata, an independent organization that analyzes the franchising sector.

“The overall economic impact of new franchise businesses opening this year is big, but at a local level, these numbers mean real jobs for real people,” said Jerry Bird Owner of FranNet of Eastern Tennessee. “If even 10 new franchises open in our area, that’s 100 jobs -- and that’s huge.”

FranNet, a North American network of franchise consultants that helps corporate workers and executives transition to business ownership, expects to help establish 20 percent more franchised businesses this year than in 2010. FranNet’s growth rate is higher than the overall franchise industry growth rate, expected to reach 2.5 percent in 2011.

Bird and other FranNet consultants report growth in service-oriented franchises that entrepreneurs can run from their homes; those typically have low overhead and buy-in costs. Each new franchise adds substantially to the economy. A business service franchise, for example, creates an average of seven jobs; commercial and residential service franchises create an average of six, according to FRANdata.

“We are seeing great franchise candidates from many age groups and industries, and many of them want to be part of the economic recovery,” Bird said. “Franchising is attractive because it works.”

In fact, franchising creates jobs at a faster clip in down markets than the overall marketplace, the IFA says. After the 2001-05 recession, jobs in franchised businesses grew 40 percent compared to 26 percent in other sectors, said IFA spokesman Matthew Heller.

“Clearly, franchising is the key to job creation,” he said.

Retail Franchise Business Leaping in to New Markets

Dunedin, Florida (PRWEB) October 10, 2011. Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More is leaping forward month after month, opening new franchise locations throughout the U.S.

With its commitment to customer service, its fun-but-fast shopping experience and its personalized support for a growing family of franchisees, in just three years, Big Frog Custom T-Shirts has grown from a single storefront in Clearwater to 36 franchises from Pennsylvania to California.

Last month Big Frogs opened in Valrico and Brooksville, FL. This month, stores will open in Athens, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Denver, CO.

Three things set the Big Frog retail concept apart from the competition: an on-site graphic artist who helps customers design their T-shirts at no charge, no minimum-order requirement, and guaranteed delivery within 24 hours.

So if a customer wants a special T-shirt for a child’s birthday, a school event, a foot race or you-name-it, that customer becomes the director and helps design the look s/he wants.

“Perfect” is a word often heard in Big Frog stores because the customers oversee the art work until, in their eyes, it is perfect.

Because customers leave satisfied, 40 percent of Big Frog’s revenues come from referrals and 25 percent from repeat business.

Unlike screen-printers, Big Frog uses an environmentally friendly, direct-to-garment printer. “We use all eco-friendly dyes. We have organic, recycled and bamboo shirts. There are no by-products or waste products,” Chief Operating Frog and co-founder Ron DeFrece says.

Owners get weeks-long training and ongoing support in securing a location, opening the store and developing systems to ensure long-term success.

“Franchising has a lot of strengths,” DeFrece says. “There’s a lot of strength in having a community of like-minded individuals with similar goals, being able to share ideas, cooperative marketing efforts and buying power.”

Big Frog is experiencing growth that rivals those seen on Inc.’s Top 500 list. The business could grow faster but the owners are controlling growth to better support the franchises.

“They become part of our family,” DeFrece explained. “We support and guide them. We talk to all of them once, if not twice, a week. We’re a tight-knit group of people.

“We have a number of accountants, bankers, who are franchisees. People you wouldn’t expect to dive into retail. They want to have fun. I have one banker in St. Louis who purchased us. He’s 68 and decided that for once in his life, he wanted to sell something people wanted to buy. Now, he's a happy business owner,” DeFrece said.

“They should not fear taking up business ventures or franchises,” he said.

For a start, he said they could look into small-scale businesses such as food products.

“We can start selling items produced locally but with limited market such as gravy for mee bandung or even nasi briyani,” he told reporters after launching the Johor-level 1Malaysia franchise roadshow here yesterday.

Razali said Permodalan Nasional Berhad would provide the necessary assistance including financial and technical aid.

Razali, who is also Umno Youth deputy chief, said the wing had started to push for economic development programmes, which included franchising businesses.

He said the wing no longer focused on “ordinary issues”.
